What is Therapeutic Massage?  Therapeutic massage involves manipulation of the soft tissue structures of the body to prevent and alleviate pain, discomfort, muscle spasm, and stress. It also improves functioning of the circulatory, lymphatic, and nervous systems, and may improve the rate at which the body recovers from injury and illness.

Although massage should not…take the place of needed medical treatment, it may be useful for certain conditions, including:

• Allergies

• Arthritis

• Asthma and bronchitis

• Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

• Chronic and temporary pain

• Circulatory problems

• Digestive disorders

• Headache

• Insomnia

• Myofascial pain

• Reduced range of motion

• Sinusitis

• Sports Injuries

• Stress

• Temporomandibular joint dysfunction (TMJ)

Available Massage Modalities

• Craniosacral: A technique for correcting cerebral and spinal imbalances or blockages

that may cause sensory, motor, or intellectual dysfunction.

• Deep Tissue: Releases chronic tension in the body through slow strokes and deep finger

pressure on the contracted areas, either following or going across the grain of muscles, tendons, and fascia.

• Swedish Massage: A system of long strokes, kneading and friction techniques on the more

superficial layers of the muscles, combined with active and passive movements of the joints.

• Sports Massage: A focus on muscle systems relevant to a particular sport.

• Reflexology: A system of points in the hands and feet thought to correspond or “reflex,” to all areas of the body.

• Trigger Point Therapy (also known as Myotherapy): An application of finger pressure to “trigger points” (painful irritated areas in muscles) to break cycles of spasm and pain.

Massage Therapy

Massage Therapy is a terrific way to release the stress of every day life. But that's not all. Massage has been shown to reduce painful muscles and joints due from injury, sports, gardening, repetitive stress while sitting at a desk and more. Call the office today for an appointment.

Where Will My Massage or Bodywork Session Take Place?

Your massage or bodywork session will take place in a warm, comfortable, quiet room. Soft music may be played to help you relax. You will lie on a table especially designed for your comfort.

How Will I Feel After the Massage or Bodywork Session?

Most people feel very relaxed. Some experience freedom from long-term aches and pains developed from tension or repetitive activity. After an initial period of feeling slowed down, people often experience increased energy, heightened awareness, and greater productivity which can last for days. It is recommended you drink plenty of water following your massage.

What Should I Do During the Massage or Bodywork Session?

Make yourself comfortable. The practitioner will either gently move you or tell you what is needed throughout the session (such as lifting your arm). Many people just close their eyes and completely relax. Others like to talk during their session. Feel free to ask the practitioner questions about massage and bodywork in general or about the particular technique you are receiving.

"Every year, more and more people are turning to massage therapy and related bodywork techniques to relieve pain and tension, increase flexibility or reduce mental and physical fatigue. But before trying this healthful and pleasurable experience, most people want to know, 'What will it be like?'"

"You will relax on a padded table designed for stability and comfort. For support, your therapist may offer cushions or an adjustable face rest. The room will be quiet, often with soft music to set a relaxing mood."

"Following a session, many people experience freedom from aches and pains that have built up over months of tension or repetitive activity. After an initial period of feeling slowed down, people often experience an increase in energy that can last for several days."

"Therapeutic massage is a remarkable tool for helping you manage stress. A deeply relaxing massage can give you a welcome break and help you feel better physically and mentally. Over time, regular massage can help you develop healthy and productive responses to life’s many challenges."

"In a stress emergency, massage provides immediate relief with soothing sensations that refocus your attention away from your worries and tensions. Studies show that massage triggers the relaxation response, taking your body off alert and setting in motion the biological processes needed to restore your resources and reverse the physical responses of “fight-or-flight."

"Few things are as distressing as chronic pain. It saps your energy and takes an emotional toll. Over time, pain can become a vicious cycle with a life of its own, continuing even after the original cause is resolved. The good news is, therapeutic massage is a simple, effective and readily available support measure for dealing with chronic pain."

"The pain cycle is a complex chain of events which reinforce each other. It can begin with injury, illness or even stress, but each element can trigger or amplify another, creating a self-perpetuating cycle"
