TRADITIONAL CHINESE MEDICINE
WHAT
IS TRADITIONAL (TCM) CHINESE MEDICINE? TCM or Oriental Medicine is an effective
and complete Primary Healthcare System (primary care in the state of Florida) that that has proven effective
for thousands of years. TCM’s basic principles have held true since their inception. Oriental medicine
has proved its effectiveness and is widely used throughout the world. TCM is the oldest continuously
used form of primary care medicine and is the most used medical system on a daily basis worldwide. Acupuncture is the fastest
growing form of medicine in the United States. TCM is the original Functional Medicine. Traditional Chinese
Medicine (TCM) is a complete stand alone medical system which has Acupuncture, Chinese Herbal Medicine, Tui Na (massage
and manipulation), dietary and lifestyle counseling as its main modalities.
Traditional Chinese Medicine
is estimated to be 5000 years old. TCM and Acupuncture is the oldest continuously
used medical system in the world and is used today by more people than any other medical system in the world.
All
other medical system except surgery are extensions of TCM. This would include drugs, chiropractic, massage, physical therapy
and the others. TCM is the original functional medicine. The philosophy of TCM and acupuncture is to treat the body so it returns to its normal
function, because when function is normal there is no illness. Drugs do not do this!! That is why you must continue
to take them. Drugs treat the symptoms of a problem and not the problem itself. By some estimates it is approximately 5000 years old. There were an estimated 30-40,000 books on
Chinese Medicine written before the turn of the century. All forms of medicine used today, allopathic (western), chiropractic,
homeopathy, osteopathic, massage, physiotherapy, nutritional therapy, can find their roots in TCM. The one modality that TCM
did not and does not have is surgery. However, most people that use TCM never need surgery. TCM includes the main modalities of acupuncture, Chinese herbal medicine, nutrition, massage, Tai Qi, Qi Qong
as well as many others. This proven system is now combined with modern science and techniques. Many of the modalities used
are the same as the ones used at your Medical Doctor’s office. This includes many of the same examination techniques,
the same instruments for diagnosis, including labs and X-Rays. TCM is used worldwide
as a primary or complimentary system to treat the same health issues as allopathic (western) medicine. Unlike Western, conventional
medicine, TCM is holistic in it approach and treats the whole person to help the body heal through improved function. Many Western herbal and allopathic treatments are aimed at treating symptoms. In order to maintain
a relief from symptoms, the treatment must be continued indefinitely. Chinese
medicine targets the underlying conditions that lead to symptoms. Once the underlying condition is treated, the symptoms will
subside, and treatment can be stopped. Oriental Medicine is both effective in
prevention as well as treatment of health issues including physical, psychological and emotional. It is often very effective
in treating issues that have not responded well to conventional medicine. It also can be effectively used as complimentary
therapy to conventional treatments. TCM including Acupuncture is recognized by
the World Health Organization to be effective in treating over of health issues. It has also been recognized by the National
Institute of Health. Acupuncture is the fastest growing field of medicine in the United States. Traditional Chinese Medicine has its own medical schools, clinics, and hospitals. Half-a-million TCM doctors
in China and tens of thousands of others outside of China treat billions of people internationally.
Is Traditional Chinese Medicine Safe? Acupuncture practiced with skilled hands is extremely safe. I have performed
over 20,00 safe and effective treatments. Most patients can’t tell when a needle is inserted. About half of our patients
go to sleep during their treatment. The needles are sterile, single use needles that are hair thin. I have performed needle
Acupuncture on patients as young 4 and as old as 95. We also have needless Acupuncture. Herbs
if properly prescribed by someone that is well trained and experienced are also very safe. Used incorrectly they can make
health issues worse or even cause harm. Remember, everything works, food, supplements, herbs, or drugs because of their chemical
activity. This is why it is extremely important to seek a physician who is trained and experienced. Chinese herbs are most
often used in formulas of 2 to 20 herbs. This allows the formulas to be more effective and treat both the symptoms and underlying
cause. Western herbs on the other hand are often used in single form and are more directed at symptomatic relief as opposed
to treating the cause. This is much the same approach as pharmaceuticals. To conclude, Chinese Herbs used correctly can remedy
health issues very safely. NOTE: Not everyone
licensed to do Acupuncture is trained in Chinese Herbal Medicine.
